It takes a village and 10 months of planning to prepare for Hartsburg’s Pumpkin Festival. Wind around the corn maze as leaves crunch under your feet, and delight in the fact that you’re completely lost. Bring your best friend, mom, brother or kid, and come home with the best pumpkin on the block and a story about your pony ride. Find all of this at Hartsburg’s Pumpkin Festival.
“Just seeing the kids get so excited is great,” says resident Jo Hackman, who was in charge of the craft booth for 18 years. “The whole weekend is family oriented. It’s the atmosphere of the festival that’s important, the people of the town.”
Whether you’re looking for a new dance tutu for your daughter or a wooden yard decoration, you can find it at the festival. Of course, the tens of thousands of pumpkins have been the focal point of the festival since 1991. Despite the drought, there shouldn’t be a pumpkin shortage this year.
About 30,000 to 50,000 people visit Hartsburg on Pumpkin Festival weekend. Live music runs all day: Saturday with bluegrass groups and gospel music on Sunday. Children’s cheeks will be covered with face-paint as they pick out the best pumpkin. Pony rides are also available. The sounds of trumpets and saxophones echo throughout the parade Saturday at 9 a.m.
“Everyone comes to see what makes a small town tick,” says resident Tate Barner. “Only little towns know how to put on a show.”
THE HOME OF THE PUMPKIN FESTIVAL FOR OVER 20 YEARS
The Hartsburg Pumpkin Festival in the heart of a small town,
Population 103 (2010 census). With the tradition of community, family and friends.
The Hartsburg Pumpkin Festival began in 1991 as a celebration of the pumpkin and the promotion for the village of Hartsburg. In those days, and to the present, Hartsburg was known as “The Garden Spot of Boone County.” That rich Missouri River bottom soil produces unique and bountiful harvests of grains, grasses, fruits, and vegetables. It was a time to share our wealth with mid-Missouri.
